SINUSITIS AND BRAIN

Sinusitis is a condition in which the lining of the sinus nerves present in the brain get inflamed for any reason whatsoever. Sinusitis is one of the most common problems observed all over the world with almost 21 million cases in America itself annually.

It is alternatively known as Nasal congestion; Rhino sinusitis. Sinusitis and brain are very closely related to each other because of the very fact that sinuses are situated inside the brain itself. Sinusitis has many types which are classified by position as well as duration.

By duration
• Acute sinusitis: if it lasts for less than 4 weeks.
• Chronic sinusitis: if it persists for more than 8 weeks.

By position
• Maxillary sinusitis: strain in the maxillary.
• Frontal sinusitis: strain in the frontal sinus.
• Ethmoid sinusitis: strain between eyes.
• Sphenoid sinusitis: strain in the forehead.

Causes:-

Sinusitis can be caused by anything which irritates the thin lining of the sinus nerves in the brain. It is mainly caused due to allergens, bacteria, viral infections, smoke, dust particles, pollen grains and other micro-particles.

Symptoms:-

The main symptoms of sinusitis are headache or facial pain. This pain mainly occurs near the involved sinus and is unbearable when the person tries to bend or lie down. There maybe nasal discharge which is greenish in color and also may contain pus. Persistent cough, cold, headache are also symptoms for sinusitis.

Connection with the brain:-

One of the major threats sinusitis poses is its complications for the brain. The close positioning of the brain to the sinuses is the most fatal factor of complication it causes.

Sinusitis and brain have a deadly connection. A thin layer of bone divides the brain from the sinuses. If an infection spreads from the sinuses to the brain it may result into meningitis, abscesses and many other life threatening conditions. Infection into the brain happens by the attack of anaerobic bacteria through the bones or blood vessels. Brain complications are most dangerous when it involves sphenoid and frontal sinuses. In most of the severe cases it results into mild personality changes, headache, distorted perception, illustration problems and eventually fatality. This way sinusitis and brain can also induce death if they are connected. There are many other complications which sinusitis can cause. Loss of senses is also one of the complications. So even if you are suffering from some symptoms of sinusitis it would be better to consult a doctor at the earliest.
